Race Recap
Isaac Del Toro wins stage 2
Mexican neo-pro Isaac Del Toro could barely speak after taking a surprise victory on stage 2 of the Santos Tour Down Under by launching a late attack in the closing kilometres of the 141km stage from Norwood to Lorbethal. The 20-year-old speedster beat out Corbin Strong, who took second and Stephen Williams, third, after a fast and hilly race.
Luke Burns attacked shortly after the start and Jardi Christiaan van der Lee was quick to follow his move. The two put approximately 7 minutes into the rest of the field before they were reeled in with 20 kilometres remaining.
Jhonatan Narváez, Julian Alaphilippe and Luke Plapp attacked from the peloton on Fox Creek Road. While the other two pushed on, the former world Champion lost contact. Plapp and Narváez reached the summit 10 seconds ahead of the first chasers.
The attackers were caught by the main group with five kilometres to go before Quinn Simmons and Bastien Tronchon jumped clear inside the last three kilometres. Just before the flamme rouge, the attack was neutralised and Isaac Del Toro was next to try. He opened a gap in the last kilometres and held off the charging bunch. The 20-year-old is the new GC leader.
