What a dramatic day in the peloton as Stage 4 of the Tour de Romandie delivered everything fans could have hoped for. The queen stage of this year's race threw up a brutal challenge with multiple significant climbs testing the legs of the overall contenders, and by the finish line, the general classification had been well and truly shaken up.
Primoz Roglic once again demonstrated why he is such a dominant force in stage racing, putting in a powerful display on the final climb to assert his authority over the race. The Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe leader timed his effort to perfection, pulling away from his rivals in the closing kilometers to take a commanding stage victory and further consolidate his position at the top of the general classification.
The day was not without its drama, as several riders who had been lurking near the top of the overall standings cracked under the pressure of the repeated climbs. The race was animated by attacks from various teams throughout the stage, with the front group being whittled down steadily as the kilometers ticked by and the gradients steepened.
Behind Roglic, the battle for the remaining podium positions was fierce, with riders digging deep into their reserves to limit their losses. Some of the pre-race favorites struggled to match the pace set by the Slovenian champion, losing precious seconds that will make their task in the days ahead considerably more difficult.
With the race now entering its final stages, Roglic looks firmly in control and will be a very difficult man to dislodge from the top of the standings.
