Nys claims yellow in the mountains
Thibau Nys, a 21-year-old Lidi-Trek rider, showcased his determination and skill by winning the first of two mountain top finishes in the Tour de Romandie from a determined breakaway. He outsprinted Andrea Vendrame and Luke Plapp in ski station Les Marécottes, a feat that earned him the leader's jersey.
The breakaway, a strategic move after 17 kilometres of action, was a testament to the teamwork and determination of the riders. Xandro Meurisse, Thibau Nys, Roger Adrià, Andrea Vendrame and Sean Flynn initiated the break, and Nikias Arndt and Xabier Mikel Azparren eventually joined them. The seven riders worked together, carving out a maximum lead of over five minutes.
While Arndt and Flynn lost contact on Les Mosses, the others' lead dropped below 3 minutes. However, it rebounded to over three minutes on the flat run-up to the final climb.
Vendrame, Nys and Meurisse were the only remaining attackers in the final 2.5 kilometres of the finishing climb. Meanwhile, Luke Plapp and Florian Lipowitz launched an attack from the GC group on the lower slopes. Plapp jumped across to the leaders and took over from Meurisse at the front.
Plapp tries to shake off the early attackers but finds himself outfoxed. In the final sprint, Vendrame and Nys take charge, with the 21-year-old Belgian emerging victorious. He not only claims the stage win but also secures the top spot in the overall standings.\n
