Cavendish Breaks TDF Record

The 5th stage of the Tour de France came down to a fast finishers' showdown. Mark Cavendish blazed to victory in the streets of Saint-Vulbas to take his coveted record of 35 Tour de France stage wins, while Tadej Pogacar retained the lead in the general classification.

The peloton took it easy as the flag dropped. There were a few playful attacks, and some excitement briefly arose when Stefan Küng and Stefan Bissegger joined forces. Eventually, Clément Russo headed out alone, and Mattéo Vercher set off in pursuit. The two came together to open up a lead of almost five minutes.

The two were caught on the CĂ´te de Lhuis, and then King of the Mountains Jonas Abrahamsen took the opportunity to grab the single KOM point at the summit.

But that’s all just a prelude to the sprint in Saint-Vulbas. Mark Cavendish completed his quest and secured his 35th Tour de France stage victory. The 39-year-old was by far the fastest, outsprinting Jasper Philipsen and Alexander Kristoff as in his best years.
