Vollering Wins Stage 3

Demi Vollering powered to a commanding ITT triumph in front of the roaring home crowds in Rotterdam during the afternoon 6km time trial. She is the new yellow jersey, while Lorena Wiebes sits in second and Charlotte Kool in third. Vollering finished with a time of 7 minutes and 30 seconds, five seconds faster than second or third.

"I really didn’t see this coming," Vollering said. "I really had no idea that I could do this today, so I’m really surprised, actually. These first days were just days that I needed to survive and I want to really just enjoy these first stages. I already had in the head tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) stage because we really love it. I really like the Liege-Bastogne–Liege race. So today, in the road stage, I was already thinking about tomorrow. After that stage, until the TT, I slept two times because I was so relaxed. I just didn’t see this coming.

"Last year, Tourmalet was ā€˜the’ stage that I needed to do it, and here, I had no expectations at all. I thought it was a stage for the sprinters and the powerful time triallists, but before the start, I just flew into it. I stayed so calm and I don’t know, it was a strange day for me! It’s up to the other teams to try and take the Yellow Jersey from our team now and it’s nice that I have it. We will try our very best to defend it to the very end. It was intense [on the podium]. I didn't want to cry but I couldn't keep tears inside. There’s so much emotion. I'm also super proud. I saw so many families getting crazy, so it made me emotional. I just did the best I could do today. Apparently, it was very good, so we really need to see the coming days; I hope the shape stays like this. We'll see what happens next. It's really special to wear it so early. It's such an iconic jersey, so I'm really proud to have it already. It's crazy because sometimes you work so hard for things and you really think you can do it, for example, the Olympics was a bit disappointing. So that makes it really special today. I always say it all starts with dreaming, but today, it was not even there in dreaming. Now it's just happened."\n
