Kool for Two

Charlotte Kool powered to victory in the streets of Rotterdam. She won the 2nd stage ahead of Lorena Wiebes and Marianne Vos. Kool extended her lead in the GC.

"It was quite a big sprint in the end," Kool said. "We were a bit far away and we knew we had to stay calm. I tried to stay calm and I just launched my sprint and it was hard. We were quite in control for the whole stage, but we heard some crashes so I hope that everyone is ok. It was quite a hectic course, but what can I say, I liked it. Winning with the Yellow Jersey, well dreams are coming true quite fast these days! First yesterday and now today winning in this jersey it is really special. I guess I am [stronger than ever], I didn’t expect this two weeks ago, but things change fast.”

Audrey De Keersmaeker was the first attacker after 30 kilometres of action. She opened up a 30-second lead before she was caught just inside the finale 10 kilometres.

"It was amazing. When you ride on your own in the front and on the side of the roads, everybody is cheering for you," De Keersmaeker said. "You're just suffering so much, but they are cheering, and it hypes you up. I think I pushed harder than I thought I could. It's amazing. I wanted to show the team in front, to show that we deserve a spot here. If you have some girls with you, it's easier to be in front but I was on my own. It is what is. I tried to make the best out of it. In the beginning, I was like, "ok, they'll catch me quite early." But then they came close to 10 10-second gap, and I tried to accelerate, and I got 30-35 seconds. I kept the pace quite well. At 10 km to go, I was like "Ok, I still don't see them behind me". You never know what's happening in the peloton. So never say never. But I knew the chance [to win] was quite low."

Both Lorena Wiebes and Charlotte Kool were launched perfectly by their respective lead-outs. The yellow jersey took the win in a close finish to extend her lead in the GC.
