Kool sprints into yellow jersey

Charlotte Kool sprinted to a commanding victory in the first stage of the Tour de France. Obviously, the Dutch sprinter earned the first yellow jersey. She outpowered Anniina Ahtosalo and Elisa Balsamo by a few bike lengths.

"It's unbelievable, a dream coming true," Kool said. "It was not an amazing season, this is what it was all about. It was really hectic and I like it! I went so early and I thought, ‘it's too long !’ It hurt so bad but it was enough in the end. There are no words! This is the best day of my life. There are so many people here, I saw some family and friends in the crowd, so it is a dream come true. Today I could really enjoy it on the bike and look around. I’m so proud to be a Dutchie and I’m so proud of this country, that so many people came and watched us. I think I’ve never seen something like this in this country before with women’s cycling. It’s a historical day. You always have to keep believing. I want to thank my trainer for believing in me and for pushing me to the limit. I want to thank all my family also. I think it will be very special [to wear the yellow jersey tomorrow]!"

Iurani Blanco initiated a breakaway after almost 20 kilometres. Agnieszka Skalniak-SĂłjka and Gaia Masetti went with her. The attack didn't last very long.

“Today was an important and special day for Laboral (Kutxa - Fundacion Euskadi)," Blanco said. "It’s our first Tour and we wanted to try to try and be in the fight for the Combativity prize and the Mountain classification. We gave it our all and we’ve managed to do it. We believed it was possible, we are fighters and we wanted to try it, to force a breakaway and to get the polka dot jersey. Now we have that jersey we will try to defend it and to fight for the GC with Ane Santesteban. It was great to see so many people out on the street supporting women’s cycling, it was incredible.”

Cristina Tonetti was the next attacker. She opened up a one-minute lead and earned the most points at the first KOM, Maasdeltatunnel. Moments later, she was swallowed by the bunch.

The stage came down to a bunch sprint. Pre-race favourite Lorena Wiebes suffered a mechanical with 500 metres to go, while Charlotte Kool powers to a commanding victory, a few bike lengths ahead of Anniina Ahtosalo and Elisa Balsamo.

Kool is the first GC leader.
