What a day of racing here at Tirreno-Adriatico as Stage 5 delivered exactly the kind of drama this race is known for. The stage finishing atop Terminillo proved to be the decisive moment in this year's edition, with the climbers finally getting their opportunity to make their mark on the general classification.
Primoz Roglic put in a commanding performance on the final ascent, demonstrating why he remains one of the most feared riders in the peloton when the road turns upward. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader timed his effort to perfection, riding away from his rivals in the closing kilometres to take a superb stage victory and move himself into a strong overall position.
The climb to Terminillo was brutal from the outset, with the peloton shattering under the pressure applied by the various team domestiques setting a fierce tempo in the lower slopes. By the time the gradient kicked up most severely, only a small group of genuine contenders remained together, with several riders who had featured prominently in the earlier stages losing significant time.
Tadej Pogacar was among those present in the lead group deep into the climb but could not match Roglic when the decisive accelerations came, losing some time to the Slovenian in the final push to the summit. It was a significant moment in the overall battle and set up what promises to be a fascinating final days of racing as the race heads toward the Adriatic coast.
