Stage 4 of this year's Tirreno-Adriatico delivered a stunning performance from Tadej Pogacar, who continues to look absolutely unstoppable at this race. The Slovenian superstar attacked on the final climb to Castelraimondo and rode away from all his rivals with an ease that was almost frightening to watch.
The day began with a breakaway group getting clear of the peloton in the early kilometers, and the escapees were allowed to build up a decent advantage as the sprinters' teams had no real interest in chasing on such a demanding parcours. The break worked well together through the rolling terrain, but their fate was sealed once the race hit the final ascent.
With several kilometers still remaining to the summit finish, Pogacar launched a ferocious acceleration that immediately shattered the leading group of favorites. One by one the other overall contenders were dropped, unable to match the sheer power of the UAE Team Emirates leader. His teammates had done an excellent job earlier in the stage, keeping things under control before delivering him to the foot of the climb in perfect position.
Behind Pogacar, a small group of survivors fought hard for the remaining podium places on the stage, with the gaps between the general classification contenders beginning to open up in a meaningful way.
Pogacar now holds a commanding lead in the overall standings and looks every bit like a man who intends to claim this race as his own before the finish on the Adriatic coast.
