Course Preview
At 207 kilometres, the 4th stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico includes the Sibillini Mountains in the first part, while the decisive action takes place on a 22.7 kilometres circuit. This features a 3 kilometres climb at 7% before the final 3 kilometres rise at 4.5% to the line.
The riders clip into their pedals in the Umbrian town of Arrone to head north on flat roads. After Borgo Cerreto the route turns east to penetrate the Monti Sibillini on false flat terrain. Gradually it gets steeper until the long climb to Castelluccio commences. The hilltop village sits at an elevation of 1,521 metres above sea level. It’s one of the highest settlements in the Apennines and the riders reach it after a climb of over 20 kilometres at an average gradient of almost 5%.
Shortly after moving through Castelluccio the Forca di Presta throws in 6.2 kilometres at 3.7% before a descent of tens of kilometres leads to Ascoli Piceno. The riders reach the medieval town after almost 130 kilometres in the saddle. On undulating terrain the route continues to the Adriatic coast.
The first passage on the line in seaside town Giulianova – which is a renowned tourist destination in Abruzzo – happens with 22.7 kilometres remaining. The main obstacle in the lap is the 3 kilometres climb at 7% to the intermediate sprint in Mosciano Sant’Angelo. With time bonuses up for grabs this is a perfect launch pad for a late attack.
It’s 14 kilometres from Mosciano Sant’Angelo to the finish line. The first 4 kilometres are flat before a downhill precedes the last 3 kilometres. The average gradient in this section sits at 4.5%, while the home straight goes up at 2%.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
