Race Recap
It was a day for the punchers at Tirreno-Adriatico as the peloton tackled a demanding third stage that ultimately came down to a select group of climbers and classics-style riders battling it out for the stage victory.
The race animated early, with the usual breakaway attempts in the opening kilometers before a group eventually got clear and built a working advantage over the peloton. The main bunch, controlled by the teams of the general classification contenders, kept the escapees on a relatively short leash throughout the day, knowing the challenging terrain in the finale would eventually bring things back together.
As the race entered its final circuits, the pace lifted dramatically and the peloton began to splinter. Several climbs in the closing kilometers proved brutal enough to shed riders from the lead group, with sprinters and heavier rouleurs losing contact as the gradient bit. The GC men moved their domestiques to the front as teams jostled for position ahead of the decisive final climb.
On the steepest ramps near the finish, attacks came in quick succession. Tadej Pogacar, who had already shown his hand as the man to beat at this race, proved once again to be in a class of his own. The Slovenian superstar timed his effort to perfection, launching a devastating acceleration that none of his rivals could follow. He crested the line alone, taking a commanding stage victory and further consolidating his grip on the overall race lead, leaving the rest of the field with serious questions about how to challenge him in the days ahead.
