The opening stage of the 2024 Tirreno-Adriatico has concluded and it was Tadej Pogacar who announced his presence at this race in the most emphatic fashion possible. The Slovenian superstar took victory in the individual time trial held in Lido di Camaiore, delivering a stunning performance that left his rivals trailing in his wake.
Pogacar, riding for UAE Team Emirates, was simply in a class of his own today, posting a time that none of his general classification rivals could come close to matching. The reigning world time trial champion Remco Evenepoel of Soudal Quick-Step put in a strong effort but was unable to match the Slovenian, having to settle for a position behind Pogacar on the day's leaderboard. Jonas Vingegaard, the Tour de France champion riding for Visma Lease a Bike, also started the race with ambitions but found himself losing time to Pogacar on this opening test against the clock.
The time trial course in Lido di Camaiore gave riders a chance to set the tone for the week ahead, and Pogacar certainly did exactly that. His performance was a clear signal to the rest of the peloton that he is in exceptional form and will be the man to beat throughout this edition of the race to the Adriatic Sea.
With the leader's jersey now on his shoulders, Pogacar heads into the road stages in the strongest possible position.
