What a day in Tuscany. The white roads delivered once again, and this year's edition will be remembered as one of the most brutal and dramatic in the race's history.
Tadej Pogacar put on an absolute masterclass today, attacking with such ferocity and at such an unlikely moment that the rest of the peloton simply had no answer. The Slovenian launched his decisive move on the Monte Sante Marie sector, one of the most punishing gravel stretches on the course, and from that point on the race was essentially over. He soloed into Siena's Piazza del Campo with a gap that grew larger and larger with every passing kilometer, arms raised as he crossed the finish line in a display of pure dominance.
Behind him, the chase was frantic but ultimately futile. Riders who had been marking each other and playing tactical games found themselves scrambling once Pogacar had gone clear. The gap ballooned to over two minutes by the time he reached the final cobbled climb into the piazza, which tells you everything you need to know about how commanding his performance was.
The dusty white roads took their toll on the peloton throughout the day. Crashes, mechanicals and the relentless rolling Tuscan terrain whittled down the contenders, and by the time the race reached its decisive moments only the strongest were still in contention for anything other than the minor placings.
Pogacar continues to look utterly unstoppable at the moment. If this is a sign of what is to come this season, his rivals have a very serious problem on their hands.
