Race Recap

The peloton rolled out of Paris under grey autumn skies for one of cycling's most traditional classics, and what followed was a fascinating chess match across the rolling terrain of the Loire Valley that ultimately came down to a explosive finale in Tours.

The race was animated early, as is typical for this monument of the cycling calendar, with a sizeable breakaway group getting clear in the opening kilometres. The escapees built a healthy advantage over the peloton, which was content to let the move go for the better part of the day, knowing that the headwinds and crosswinds that can so often play a decisive role in Paris-Tours would be a factor in shaping the race.

The peloton's control began to fracture as the kilometres wound down, with teams jostling for position and the breakaway's lead beginning to crumble. The closing roads toward Tours saw the gap come down rapidly as the sprinters' teams and opportunists alike sensed their moment.

It was Biniam Girmay who proved to be the strongest man on the day, the Intermarché-Wanty rider timing his effort to perfection in the final stretch to take a memorable victory. The Eritrean champion showed remarkable power and composure to hold off his rivals, crossing the line with his arms aloft in celebration. It was a performance that underlined his status as one of the most complete and exciting riders in the peloton, adding another prestigious classic to what has already been a remarkable career trajectory for the young star.
