2024 Paris-Nice Stage 5 Results & Recap
Stage 5 of the 2024 Paris-Nice is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The peloton tackled a demanding stage today that ultimately came down to the climbers, as the race continues to develop into a fascinating contest for the overall classification.
A breakaway group went clear early in the stage and built up a sizeable advantage over the peloton, which was controlled for much of the day by the teams of the general classification contenders. The escapees worked well together and looked threatening for a long time, but the gap was gradually whittled down as the race approached its final kilometres.
The stage was decided on the climb to the finish, where the real contenders for the overall victory came to the fore. Matteo Jorgenson, who has been riding impressively throughout this race, once again showed his quality, though it was stage hunting and time gaps that proved decisive on the day.
Stage honours went to a rider who timed his effort perfectly on the final ascent, with the peloton fractured and only the strongest able to stay in contention. The general classification picture shifted once again, with seconds being gained and lost among the top riders.
It was another day that demonstrated just how unpredictable and compelling Paris-Nice remains as a race. With several stages still to come, including further opportunities in the mountains, nothing is settled in the overall standings and the race to the Côte d'Azur promises to remain wide open in the days ahead.
