Santiago Buitrago wins Stage 4
Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) won stage 4 of Paris Nice after following a late attack from Lucas Plapp (Jayco AlUla), which proved fruitful for the Colombian climber top of Mont Brouilly. Plapp took second place and the overall lead of the Race to the Sun.
“I really did not expect this even if I knew I was in good condition," Buitrago said. "When I saw that Roglic was trying to make the race harder, I did not know how it would work out so I attacked from afar. To win a World Tour race here in France is exceptional for me. You need to try and that’s what I did. I had good legs and a good breakaway companion with Platt who helped me into the finale. I’m also well placed in the GC so it’s great. The aim was to help Pello Bilbao or myself make it on the podium so it’s great for the team. It’s an amazing day for Bahrain. We did a very good job.”
Plapp took off on the Col du Fut d’Avenas (Cat. 1) and he was later joined by Buitrago. The pair stayed away while the rest of the GC favorites kept watchful eyes on each other.
Matthias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) claimed third just ahead Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick-Step) and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers).
