Race Recap
Jan Tratnik wins Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Jan Tratnik (Team Visma Lease a bike) won today's edition of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad after outsprinting his breakaway companion Nils Politt (UAD) in the finale. His teammate, Wout van Aert (TVL) , took third in the reduced field sprint into Ninove.
"In the end, last k, I was a bit worried whether I could win the sprint. Then I saw that Nils started quite early and was already pulling, so I started believing I could win," Tratnik said. "Today I was more in a domestique role. The guys did a really good job in splitting the race. I was behind a little bit. I could be behind – not relaxed – but I knew we had five guys in front. Then in the end, I just kept believing. We caught back all the guys and I went to counter-attack and in the end I won."
It was a chaotic and disorganized 202km race from the start. Several breakaways escaped however, the real danger move came after 60km, when Visma lease a bike split the peloton, leaving around 30 riders in the front group containing five from Visma-Lease A Bike – Van Aert, Jorgenson, Benoot, Laporte and Edoardo Affini – Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny), Gianni Moscon, Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-QuickStep), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Tom Pidcock, Connor Swift, Luke Rowe and Ben Turner.
From there, the Visma squad traded attacks until the final blow stuck and Tratnik escaped with Politt.
