What a day on the roads from Milan to the Ligurian coast. The 2024 edition of La Classicissima delivered a stunning finale that will be talked about for years to come, with Tadej Pogacar claiming victory in emphatic fashion after a breathtaking display of aggression on the Poggio.
The race unfolded largely as expected through the long flat opening hours, with the peloton content to let a breakaway group go up the road and accumulate a sizeable lead before the bunch began to close the gap as the race moved into its decisive final phase. Crosswinds and crashes kept teams on alert throughout the day, but the real action was always going to come in those final kilometres along the coast.
As the race hit the Cipressa, the tempo began to rise sharply and the peloton started to fragment. By the time the Poggio came into view, the stage was set for the inevitable showdown among the favourites. And then Pogacar simply detonated the race. The Slovenian launched a ferocious acceleration on the climb that nobody could match, dancing away from a group that contained many of the finest classics riders in the world.
His descent into Sanremo was characteristically fearless, and he arrived at the Via Roma with a gap that was never going to be closed. He crossed the line alone, arms aloft, having produced one of the most dominant performances this race has ever seen. Mathieu van der Poel took second, with the rest of the favourites trailing in behind.
Pogacar now adds Milano-Sanremo to his already extraordinary palmarès.
