Williams First Brit to Win Fleche Wallonne
Stephen Williams won a cold and rainy edition of La Flèche Wallonne with a late attack. He struck on the last steep stretches of the Wall of Huy, just before entering the home straight, and held off Kévin Vauquelin and Maxim Van Gils to take the win.
Lilian Calmejane, Alan Jousseaume, James Whelan and Txomin Juaristi attacked from the gun, and Igor Chzhan and Johan Meens joined them after a 15-minute chase. The six carved out a five-minute lead.
The floodgates opened up by the time the attackers entered the finishing circuit around Huy. It was freezing cold as the last attackers were caught with 68 kilometres remaining. Søren Kragh Andersen attacked from the remnants of the peloton on the plateau after the second climb up the Wall of Huy. Many pre-race favourites—Tom Pidcock, Dylan Teuns, Michael Matthews, David Gaudu—were among the riders who were out of contention due to the cold.
Kragh Andersen opened up a 1'30" minute lead as he entered the final bell lap one minute ahead of the first chaser, Stephen Williams. He waited for Richard Carapaz, Maxim Van Gils, Santiago Buitrago and Kévin Vauquelin.
A small peloton caught the chasers inside the last 17 kilometres before Kragh Andersen was brought back on the Côte d’Ereffe.
Despite the unusual development of the race, La Flèche Wallonne came down to the final haul up the Wall of Huy. Stephan Williams jumped in genuine Valverde-style just before the climb evened out a little. He distanced his rivals and had enough energy left to keep Kévin Vauquelin at bay, while Maxim Van Gils came home in third position.
