What a day of racing in the Belgian classics opener. Mathieu van der Poel came into today's Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne as one of the favorites, but it was Mads Pedersen who ultimately stamped his authority on proceedings, claiming a brilliant victory to kick off the cobbled classics season in style.
The race played out over the lumpy roads of West Flanders, with the peloton facing the usual combination of challenging climbs and exposed roads that make this semi-classic such a demanding test so early in the season. Conditions were relatively favorable compared to some editions of this race, though the roads were still demanding enough to make their mark on the legs of the riders.
The decisive move came in the final stages as a select group of riders managed to establish a gap over the chasing peloton. Pedersen, racing for Lidl-Trek, proved to be the strongest in that group, deploying his powerful sprint to take the win and deny his breakaway companions any chance of glory.
It was a statement performance from the big Dane, who has made no secret of his ambitions in the one-day classics. His ability to combine strength over the hard roads with a finishing sprint that few can match makes him one of the most dangerous riders in this part of the season.
