The peloton tackled a brutal day in the Basque Country as Stage 5 of the Itzulia delivered the kind of explosive racing this race is known for. The stage featured a demanding parcours with multiple climbs that whittled the leading contenders down to a small group of the best climbers in the world.
Remco Evenepoel was the man of the day, putting in a stunning performance to claim the stage victory. The Belgian champion timed his attack to perfection on the final climb, launching himself clear of the other GC favorites and riding to the line with authority. His climbing on the day was simply on another level compared to his rivals, and he crossed the finish line with his arms raised in well-deserved celebration.
Primoz Roglic was once again present among the top finishers, continuing to show his class and consistency throughout the week. The Slovenian veteran knows these roads as well as anyone and was once again in the mix as the race approached its conclusion. His performance in the finale demonstrated that he remains one of the key players heading into the final stage.
The battle for the overall classification remained tight, with Evenepoel's stage win shaking up the standings and setting up what promises to be an enthralling final day of racing. Several other riders lost time on the brutal climbs, effectively ending their overall ambitions and clarifying the picture at the top of the general classification.
