Stage 4 of the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The peloton tackled a demanding stage today through the Basque hills, and it was Remco Evenepoel who demonstrated his class once again to take the stage victory and further cement his position in the overall standings.
The day began with the inevitable breakaway attempts in the early kilometres, with several riders pushing hard to establish a move off the front. Eventually a group managed to get clear and build a reasonable advantage over the peloton, which was largely controlled by the teams of the general classification favourites. The escapees worked well together and held their lead for a significant portion of the stage, daring to dream of a possible stage win.
However, as the race approached the final climbs, the peloton began to wind things up and the break was gradually reeled in. The tension increased with each kilometre as the race entered its decisive final phase. Attacks began to fly from the favourites group on the penultimate climb, with riders testing each other and probing for weaknesses.
On the final ascent it was Evenepoel who proved strongest, riding away from his rivals with a convincing display of climbing ability. He pushed a strong tempo that none of the other overall contenders could match, and he crossed the line with a clear margin to take a well deserved victory.
Primoz Roglic and Mikel Landa were among those finishing in the chasing group, with the overall standings seeing Evenepoel take a firm grip on the race lead heading into the remaining stages.
