What a spectacular day in the Basque hills as Remco Evenepoel claimed a stunning victory on Stage 3 of the Itzulia Basque Country, soloing to the line after a breathtaking display of climbing and time trialling ability on a demanding parcours.
The stage was one of genuine attrition, with the peloton being whittled down on the brutal climbs that characterised the route. As the race hit the key ascents, the pure climbers and GC contenders began to assert themselves, and it was the Belgian champion Evenepoel who ultimately proved strongest of all, going clear of his rivals and pushing hard all the way to the finish.
Primoz Roglic, racing on home roads with Bora-Hansgrohe, was once again a prominent figure throughout the day and showed excellent form, finishing in the front group and continuing to demonstrate that he will be a major factor in the overall classification battle. His knowledge of these roads is unrivalled and his presence at the front of the race was no surprise to anyone.
The stage also saw several of the other main contenders perform admirably, with Carlos Rodriguez and others keeping themselves in contention for the general classification. However, none could match Evenepoel when it mattered most, and the Soudal Quick-Step leader took the stage honours with authority.
With the race now well and truly alive, the general classification standings have been reshuffled, and the remaining stages promise further fireworks in what is shaping up to be a thoroughly entertaining edition of the Itzulia Basque Country.
