What a race. Il Lombardia 2024 has delivered another stunning edition of cycling's final monument of the season, and when it was all said and done, Tadej Pogacar once again proved why he is in a class of his own this year.
The Slovenian superstar, who has been absolutely unstoppable throughout 2024, put in a commanding performance on the roads around Como and Bergamo, attacking with devastating effect on the climbs to ride clear of his rivals and cross the finish line alone. It was a display of supreme dominance, the kind that leaves observers searching for the right superlatives.
The race unfolded beautifully over its brutal parcours, with the peloton gradually whittled down by the relentless succession of climbs that make this race so special. The Madonna del Ghisallo, as ever, played its role in shaping the day, and as the race moved toward its conclusion the field was reduced to a small group of the very best riders in the world.
But when Pogacar chose to make his move, nobody could follow. His acceleration was simply too powerful, too clean, and the gap opened immediately and decisively. Behind him, riders fought hard for the remaining podium positions, but the victory was never in doubt once he hit the front.
For Pogacar, this adds yet another monument to what has been a historically remarkable season. The tifosi lining the roads got exactly the kind of performance they had hoped for, and Il Lombardia once again lived up to every expectation.
