2024 Il Giro d'Abruzzo Stage 3 Results & Recap
Stage 3 of the 2024 Il Giro d'Abruzzo is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
The peloton tackled a demanding stage today through the rugged terrain of Abruzzo, and it was a day that ultimately came down to a fierce battle among the climbers as the race headed into the hills.
A breakaway group formed early in the stage, with several riders seizing the initiative and pushing clear of the peloton in the opening kilometers. The escapees worked well together and built up a solid advantage, giving them hope that they might survive to the finish. However, the teams of the general classification contenders were not willing to let the gap grow too large, and the peloton kept the break on a relatively short leash throughout the day.
As the race hit the decisive climb in the final kilometers, the breakaway was swept up and the real racing began in earnest. The pace lifted dramatically and riders began to shed from the front group one by one. It was on these steep slopes that Diego Ulissi made his move, attacking with purpose and showing that he still has the climbing legs to trouble the best in this kind of race.
Antonio Tiberi was also present and active in the finale, demonstrating his credentials as one of the stronger stage racers in the field. The fight for stage honors and overall positioning was intense as the riders pushed toward the summit finish.
In the end it was a day that reshuffled the general classification standings and set up what promises to be a compelling final stage of the race.
