The rolling hills and rugged mountain passes of central Italy provide the backdrop for one of the more underappreciated stage races on the European calendar. Il Giro d'Abruzzo returns in 2024 as a compact but demanding test that regularly punches above its weight in terms of the quality of racing it produces, drawing riders who are either sharpening their form for the spring classics or beginning to build toward the summer grand tours.

The race traverses the Abruzzo region, a part of Italy that remains relatively wild and unspoiled compared to the more celebrated landscapes of Tuscany or the Dolomites. The terrain here is unforgiving, with steep gradients and unpredictable weather that can transform what looks on paper like a manageable stage into something genuinely brutal. Snow is not out of the question in the higher elevations, and the winds that funnel through the valleys can shred a peloton without warning.

This year's edition is expected to follow the established format of four stages, offering enough time for a genuine overall classification battle to develop while also providing opportunities for breakaway specialists and puncheurs to stake their claims. The climbers will likely have the final say, as the race traditionally concludes with a summit or near-summit finish that rewards those with the best power-to-weight ratios.

The startlist will attract attention from riders representing a mix of WorldTour squads and ambitious ProTeam outfits, with the latter often using events like this to announce themselves to a wider audience. Expect the racing to be aggressive from the opening kilometres, as no team will want to surrender initiative in a race where every second counts across just four days of competition.
