Race Recap
Kooij wins stage 9 of the Giro d'Italia
As the race neared its end, Jhonathan Narváez launched a daring attack within the final 8 kilometers. He came agonizingly close to victory, only to be caught in the last meters by a charging Olav Kooij, who narrowly outpaced Jonathan Milan at the line. Meanwhile, Tadej Pogacar maintained his lead in the general classification, adding to the race's intense drama.
The race kicked off with a burst of energy as teammates Mirco Maestri and Andrea Pietrobon launched an early attack. Despite Manuele Tarozzi's efforts to close the gap, the duo managed to open up a significant lead of almost four minutes, setting the stage for a thrilling race.
The gap fell below 1 minute on the Monte di Procida, while Tim Merlier and Fabio Jakobsen were dropped from the pack.
Julian Alaphilippe attacked a short climb with 27 kilometers remaining. Nicola Conci went with him, and the two overhauled the two leaders. Kevin Vermaerke and Lewis Askey bridged across, too, while Ewen Costiou closed the gap after a 5-kilometre chase.
Alaphilippe went again on the subsequent climb. Costiou followed his move.
The two are almost caught inside the last 10 kilometres, which inspired Alaphilippe to give it another dig. He was caught by Jhonathan Narváez when the winner of stage 1 attacked from the peloton inside the last 8 kilometers. He enters the last kilometre with a 12-second lead.
The sprinters overhauled Narváez in the last 30 metres before Olav Kooij outgunned Jonathan Milan by a slim margin. Tadej Pogacar, who leads out number three Sebastián Molano, retains the pink jersey.
