2024 Giro d'Italia Stage 5 Results & Recap
Stage 5 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.

Thomas wins from the breakaway
Benjamin Thomas became the surprise winner of stage 5 after the peloton tried to chase down four attackers in the finale but miscalculated. Enzo Paleni, Michael Valgren, Andrea Pietrobon, and Thomas stayed ahead, with the latter sprinting to victory. Tadej Pogacar retained the maglia rosa.
Mattia Bais, Lewis Askey and Ewen Costiou initiated the breakaway shortly after the start. Costious decided against it on second thought and waited for the peloton while Simon Geschke and Manuele Tarozzi replaced him at the front. Their maximum lead was slightly over 2 minutes.
The peloton trailed by one minute on the Passo del Bracco. Fabio Jakobsen was the first rider to lose contact because Alpecin-Deceuninck set a fast pace. Tim Merlier, Fernando Gaviria and Caleb Ewan struggled in the last three kilometres, but they made it back on the descent. Meanwhile, the attackers were caught. Jakobsen rejoined the peloton with 90 kilometres remaining.
Enzo Paleni, Michael Valgren, Andrea Pietrobon and Benjamin Thomas initiated the second breakaway right after the intermediate sprint in Ceparana. They opened up a lead of over 1.30 minutes.
The gap was still 25 seconds inside the last 2 kilometres, and under the flamme rouge, things started looking very positive for the break, which inspired Pietrobon to attack. Valgren brought him back before Thomas outgunned the Dane in the sprint for the win.
Tadej Pogacar retained the maglia rosa.
