Course Preview

The 4th stage of the Giro d'Italia is a 187 kilometres long race Acqui Terme to Andora, on the Italian Riviera. The finishing venue lies at the foot of the Capo Mele.

So the people of Andora are used to cycling pelotons. After all, Milan-Sanremo moves through town every spring.

The riders tackle Capo Mele from the same side as during La Primavera. It’s a 2.5 kilometres climb with an average gradient of 5.2%. The last 2 kilometres go downhill.

Capo Mele lies somewhat lost in a flat finale. In fact, the route of the Giro’s 4th stage includes only one climb. The Colle del Melogno is 8.8 kilometres long and averaging 4.3%. The impact on the outcome will be zilch, as the Melogno peaks out with roughly 100 kilometres remaining. The route then goes mainly downhill for 35 kilometres and the succeeding 60 kilometres are flat. Then Capo Mele appears.

The second intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds, while the first three riders on the line gain 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
