Pogacar takes five

Following a long-range attack, Julian Alaphilippe was caught by Ewen Costiou, Christian Scaroni, and Giulio Pellizzari with five kilometres to go on the Monte Pana. The race finished on a wall, and that's where Tadej Pogacar took the reins. He overhauled Pellizzari 600 meters from the line and won his fifth stage in the Giro.

Undeterred by the pack, Marco Frigo launched an attack right from the start. For a grueling 30 kilometres, he maintained a slight lead, showcasing his endurance and determination, before eventually being caught.

Then Davide Ballerini, Mirco Maestri, Andrea Piccolo, and Julian Alaphilippe gave it a dig. The four opened up a two-minute lead, but it was down to one minute when they entered the Passo Pinei. Alaphilippe headed out alone on the climb, and he distanced the peloton to two minutes.

Pelayo Sánchez attacked from the main group with 20 kilometres remaining. Ewen Costiou, Christian Scaroni and Giulio Pellizzari counter-attacked 5 kilometres later, while Romain Bardet was dropped from the peloton.

The three chasers rejoined Alaphilippe with five kilometres to go on the Monte Pana. At that point, the peloton was 25 seconds behind.

The last two kilometres were a wall. Costiou headed out alone, but Pellizzari countered him. In the background, it was the pink jersey who dropped all the other riders. He gobbled up Pellizzari with 600 metres left to take his fifth stage win in the Giro.

Daniel Felipe MartĂnez dropped Geraint Thomas to finish in third place on the day, which moves him up to second place overall.
