Race Recap
Milan takes his third at Giro
Jonathan Milan powered to his third stage win in the streets of Cento. Stanisław Aniołkowski and Phil Bauhaus came home in second and third, while Tadej Pogacar stayed in the maglia rosa.
Andrea Pietrobon, Manuele Tarozzi, and Alessandro Tonelli were the breakaway riders. The trio raced to a lead of 3 minutes, which is all they managed to squeeze out of a determined peloton with hungry sprinters.
With 62 kilometres to go, Ineos strategically upped the pace in the crosswinds. The peloton split and Milan was among the riders forced to chase. The lead group was caught while the alarm bells rang for about 20 kilometers. Then it was gruppo compatto again.
Dries De Pooter and Martin Marcellusi established the second breakaway inside the last 30 kilometres. De Pooter dropped his companion halfway to the finish line before he was caught with 9 kilometres to go.
Lidl-Trek, demonstrating impeccable teamwork, did a perfect job in leading out Milan. When Fernando Gaviria opened his sprint early, the maglia ciclamino used the Colombian as his final launch pad before storming to his third stage win in the Giro d’Italia.
Tadej Pogacar finished safely in the peloton to extend his lead in the GC.
