What a day in the classics. Gent-Wevelgem 2024 delivered everything you could ask for from a spring classic, with Mathieu van der Poel putting on an absolute masterclass to take the victory in style.
The race unfolded over the familiar cobbled roads and punishing climbs of the Flemish countryside, with the peloton facing the brutal crosswinds that so often shape this race. The Kemmelberg, that vicious little climb that has broken so many dreams in this event, once again proved decisive as the race shattered into pieces on its slopes.
Van der Poel was imperious throughout, looking relaxed and in total control while others around him were visibly suffering. His Alpecin-Deceuninck team rode an exceptional race, keeping their leader out of trouble and positioned perfectly as the race moved into its decisive phase.
A dangerous breakaway had animated the early kilometers, giving the television audience something to watch while the peloton organized itself behind. But as is so often the case in these spring races, the gap was managed carefully and the sprinters teams made sure the break never got fully out of hand.
In the closing stages, after multiple crosswind splits and the chaos of the Kemmelberg passages, van der Poel made his move with devastating effect. He attacked with characteristic power and authority, distancing the remaining contenders and rolling to the finish line in Wevelgem with his arms raised in that familiar triumphant celebration.
Another classic, another masterpiece from the Dutchman.
