Race Recap
Gee wins stage 3
Derek Gee won the third stage of the Criterium du Dauphiné after a late attack and bested Romain Grégoire in a sprint-à-deux to move into the overall race lead. The peloton finished three seconds later.
There was a lot of movement from the start, but the peloton was still together when Nicolas Prodhomme, Rémy Rochas and Harrison Sweeny jumped away after 30 kilometres of action. It was the right move, and the trio raced to a lead of three minutes.
The gap fell to one minute within the last 40 kilometres, which inspired Christopher Juul-Jensen to bridge across.
Rochas was no longer on board at the front when the peloton sped up to bring the gap down in the last 15 kilometres.
The main group gobbled up the remaining attackers with 2.6 kilometres remaining.
Krists Neilands struck inside the last 800 metres. As soon as he was brought back, his teammate Derek Gee went. Romain Grégoire followed the Canadian and he opened the sprint early. Gee gave it another dig to overhaul the Frenchman and sprint to victory. He took the yellow jersey as a bonus.
