Race Recap

Pedersen wins stage 1

Mads Pedersen began the Critérium du Dauphiné with a commanding victory. The Dane outsprinted Sam Bennett and Hugo Page in the streets of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule. Pedersen is the first GC leader.

The race saw the early aggression of Mark Donovan, who launched his attack at kilometre 4. Mathis Le Berre was quick to respond, but Donovan was relentless. He strategically secured the most points at the first two KOM climbs, ensuring the mountains jersey was his before he allowed Le Berre to overtake him after 32 kilometres.

Donovan cemented his mountains competition lead at the third and last KOM of the day.

For what seemed like an eternity, the two riders maintained a formidable lead of over four minutes ahead of the peloton. The tension was palpable as the peloton relentlessly pursued, finally catching up within the last 16 kilometres.

Attacks by Nils Politt and Jonas Rutsch were neutralized, and then it was up to the fast men in Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule.

Mads Pedersen rounded out an excellent Lidl-Trek lead-out to take the stage win and leader’s jersey.
