What a race. What an absolute race. Glasgow delivered a world championship road race that will be talked about for years, and when the dust settled it was Remco Evenepoel who crossed the line to defend his rainbow jersey, becoming the first man in decades to successfully defend the world title in the road race.
The day unfolded over a demanding circuit around Glasgow and the surrounding Scottish countryside, with the relentless Côte de Montrose proving to be the race's defining feature. Lap after lap the peloton was whittled down, and by the closing stages only the very best were left standing.
It was a race of attrition and tactics, with numerous breakaway attempts throughout the day. Teams lined up with clear ambitions, but the punishing nature of the course meant that nothing came easy. Mathieu van der Poel was again a marked man, and Belgium had the luxury of numbers, with Evenepoel working in tandem with Wout van Aert to keep the race under control.
As the final circuits came around, the group splintered and reformed, with attacks flying from all directions. Van Aert played a crucial role in softening up the remaining contenders, burning matches so that his teammate could have the legs when it mattered most.
And when Evenepoel finally made his decisive move, nobody could respond. He drove clear with purpose and conviction, time trialing his way to the finish line with the kind of power output that simply leaves other riders shaking their heads. He crossed the line alone, arms aloft, tears streaming down his face.
