Kämna wins stage 9

Lennard Kämna took home victory for Bora-Hansgrohe in the hilly, testing stage before the rest day after attacking the breakaway at the base of the Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca, and holding his advantage to the line ahead of Matteo Sobrero (JAY) and Chris Hamilton (DSM).

"I’m super happy [to have won stages in the three Grand Tours]," Kamna said. "I’ve worked really hard the last couple of months. It wasn’t always easy after the Giro, a lot of setbacks, and I’m so happy to be back on the podium and to take this win. There were echelons in the beginning. I tried to play it as smooth as possible, following without spending too much energy and after 50 kilometres, when it came back on the climb, I still had some power to make the break. In the end, it was really tricky, because the climb was always going up and down, it was hard to find room to drop the others. You just try to feel the situation. I saw I had a bit of a gap ahead of a corner so I thought I’d go full gas there. I went over my limit for two minutes and then it was just a fight until the end."

Sepp Kuss (Jumbo Visma) retains his lead in the overall, 43 seconds ahead of Lenny Martinez (GFC).

"We just wanted to be in the front with all of us from the beginning. We knew how strong the wind was," Kuss said. "We looked back and there was a pretty small group. I had to suffer a lot, but luckily, I had good enough legs to help the train in the group. It was a nervous day, super windy, but I came through really well. It was really slippery and really muddy, so I think they made a good decision where they did. It was a very explosive final climb but after such a hard day, the legs were tired."\n
