Race Recap
Roglič and Jumbo Visma dominate the Angliru
Primož Roglič (TJV) took home another win for the juggernaut squad of Jumbo Visma, who have all but locked up the top three spots on the Vuelta a Espana podium with four stages to go. The Slovenian pulled away from teammate and race leader Sepp Kuss (TJV) on the steep gradients of Altu de L'Angliru, towing Jonas Vingegaard (TJV) along in the process.
"I always feel getting older you get a bit better," Roglic said. "It was a much nicer result than last time [losing La Roja on the Angliru in 2020]. It was not really tactical. On the last climb, the point where I went, it’s just so hard and so steep… I did my own tempo and the climb made the difference. I let [Bahrain Victorious] pace, they were going fast enough, and the moment I felt the pace was a bit dropping, I went for it, and I did my own pace until the top. I spoke with Sepp Kuss. I know it’s a weird feeling but on such a steep climb, everyone goes as fast as possible and then we see. I told him: ‘Keep fighting, keep believing and you will make it.’"
The Tour de France champion finished second to Roglic, climbing to within eight seconds of Kuss's slender lead in the overall competition. The fight for the GC podium is pretty much over, however, where the Jumbo Visma riders will be standing has yet to be decided.
"I’m really happy," Kuss said. "When I crossed the finish line, I thought I had lost the jersey. And I wasn’t even sad because I gave it the best I could on the climb. When I heard I still had the jersey, I was a bit surprised. Strange feelings today, but not in a bad way! Another day with my two strong teammates, my friends as well… I think we had as good as a time you can racing up the Angliru and it was just a crazy day. One day closer. Halfway up the climb, [Jonas Vingegaard] told me: ‘You’re gonna win’. And I was like, ‘we’ll see’. Primoz [Roglic] felt super good on the climb and just rode amazing. I tried to stay with him as long as I could and then limit the damage in the end. Another 1-2-3. Landa probably deserved the podium spot more than I did but I knew it would be close for the jersey and I need to go for the bonus seconds. It was a very happy birthday, spending it doing what I enjoy most."
