Remco's Redemption

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - QuickStep), determined to overcome the disappointment of yesterday's performance, attacked early on stage 14 of the Vuelta a Espana and spent the majority of the mountain stage off the front with Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich). On the final climb, Evenepoel easily rode away from the Frenchman to take his fourth win at the Spanish tour.

"Yesterday was a really difficult day, and also the evening. I couldn’t sleep too much," Evenepoel said. "I had a very bad night, with a lot of negative thoughts in my head. Today I woke up and I told myself: ‘just go for it, make the most of it’. I did a recon of this stage because it was an important stage for the GC. I knew perfectly knew how the climbs were, how hard they were, because it was a really tough stage. It’s just super nice to take a second stage win. The first hour of racing was full gas. I was feeling pretty good, always in the mix. I ended up alone in the front group but then Mattia Cattaneo joined us and he set a strong pace on the first climb. Juanpe Lopez attacked, I countered and we were in the front with only Romain [Bardet]. The gap got bigger on the descent and we worked really well together. I said I was gonna do the pace on the climbs as long as he was gonna collaborate with me on the flat. I can be very proud with this answer after yesterday. The mountain jersey and some stage wins, I think that’s some nice goals towards Madrid."

Sepp Kuss (Jumbo Visma) defended his jersey with aplomb today. He remains 1:37 ahead of teammate Primoz Roglic and 1:44 in front of Jonas VIngegaard.

"[What Remco Evenepoel did] is really impressive," Kuss said. "It’s a nice way to bounce back after yesterday and I’m happy for him that he could get a win after yesterday maybe being a disappointing day. Hats off to him. We knew he would be motivated to attack but we weren’t particularly worried about the breakaway today, we just had to focus on staying together because we knew the second climb, Larrau, would be tricky if riders in general attacked there, but we kept it under control and it all stayed together to the finish. We knew that it was one of the better chances [for rivals] to try something, especially with how hard the first two climbs were, so close together. [UAE Team Emirates] did a really impressive stage but all three of us were there and guys like Attila [Valter] and Robert [Gesink] came back so we were always in a good place as a team."\n
