Race Recap
Sebastian Molano wins stage 12
Colombian rocket Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates) won stage 12 in Zaragoza after timing his sprint acceleration perfectly to beat out Kaden Groves (ADC) and Boy van Poppel (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty during a flat as a pancake 150km stage that was designed for the fast men of the Vuelta a Espana.
"I’m very happy," Molano said after his victory. "Thanks to my team for the work they did today. They were amazing. This victory is for my team, and for my family. Two stages in La Vuelta, last year and now this year… After the injuries, it was not an easy year but now I’m really happy. We have very strong men for the overall classification. We need to take care of them. Today, the team worked for me. Rui [Oliveira] was perfect, Marc [Soler] was perfect as well. Everything went like we had planned in the meeting. The last turn to the left, we had to be upfront already, stick to the barriers and open up the sprint. I didn’t know there were so many Colombian fans at the finish. They often come to Spanish races and I’m grateful to them for their support. I could hear the fans screaming my name. This is also for them and I hope they enjoy this victory."
Overall leader Sepp Kuss (Jumbo Visma) will have his work cut out for him this weekend when the Vuelta heads back into the mountains.
"It’s really nice [to have Jonas Vingegaard giving me a bottle] but to be honest, both Jonas and Primoz [Roglic] have given me a lot of advice and confidence through the race," Kuss said. "It’s nice that they’re also believing in me, at times, but we’re all there for each other, I think that’s the most important. It never hurts to try [to gain seconds, like Roglic did]. If you’re in good position, it’s easy to go for it. Tomorrow should be bigger differences but it’s always good. It’s hard to say right now [if tomorrow will be about defense or attack]. We still have the three of us up there. I’ll have to see how I feel."\n
