Course Preview
The 12th stage of the Vuelta a España is 150.6 kilometres long and leads predominantly downhill. The route takes in 888 climbing metres and almost twice as many metres on the descent. A sprint finish is the most likely outcome.
The route sets off in style – that is, on the descent. The riders move through Tarazone after 25 flying kilometres to tackle the steepest climb of the day. Nothing special though, it’s not even classified as an ascent. Then it’s time for endless false flats. First down for tens of kilometres, then up, and then down again.
The last 35 kilometres of the 12th stage are pan-flat, so a bunch sprint is next to certain.
Zaragoza is far from a staple destination of La Vuelta. In fact, it’s been fifteen years since Sébastien Hinault sprinted to victory in the fifth largest city of Spain.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10,6 and 4 second, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
