The 2023 Vuelta a España promises to be one of the most compelling editions of the Spanish grand tour in recent memory, with a stacked field of climbers and general classification contenders set to battle across three weeks of racing through the Iberian Peninsula.
The race gets underway with a team time trial in Barcelona, a nod to the city as it marks the 1992 Olympic anniversary, before the peloton heads south and eventually west toward Madrid. The route features an abundance of uphill finishes and summit finishes that should suit pure climbers, with the Angliru and other fearsome Spanish ascents waiting in the final week to potentially shatter any remaining ambitions.
Defending champion Remco Evenepoel arrives as one of the clear favourites after his dominant performance twelve months ago, but the young Belgian faces a much stronger field this time around. Primoz Roglic, who has won the Vuelta three times and knows the race intimately, returns looking for a fourth title and will be a constant threat in every mountain stage. His experience in Spain is almost unmatched in the modern era and he remains perhaps the single most dangerous rider in the field.
Jonas Vingegaard, fresh from his Tour de France triumph, adds further intrigue to the startlist, though questions remain about how his legs will respond to a third grand tour of the season. Sepp Kuss, the American climber and Jumbo-Visma teammate, could also emerge as a factor given his exceptional form on Spanish roads in previous years.
The heat, the crowds, and the relentless climbing that defines the Vuelta should produce a race full of attacks and drama.
