The peloton heads to Spain's eastern coast for the 2023 edition of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, a five-stage race that has grown considerably in prestige over recent years and consistently attracts a strong field of contenders keen to find early season form.

The race begins on February 1st and runs through to February 5th, taking riders through the varied terrain of the Valencia region, from the flat Mediterranean coastline to the more demanding inland roads where the climbers will look to make their mark. The parcours offers something for everyone, with sprint stages likely to punctuate the racing before the general classification battle reaches its decisive moments in the hills.

Among the favourites heading into the race is Primoz Roglic, the Jumbo-Visma leader who has shown remarkable consistency at this event in previous years and will be eager to use the Valencian roads as a springboard for his season. The Slovenian's presence alone elevates the level of competition and his squad is among the most powerful in the world, capable of controlling races and delivering their leader in prime condition for the final kilometres.

Brandon McNulty of UAE Team Emirates represents another genuine threat to the overall honours, while the climbing stages could bring opportunists from various teams into contention. The sprinting stages will likely see the pure fast men battle it out, with the likes of Mads Pedersen and other speed merchants potentially targeting stage wins before the race moves into more selective territory.

Weather conditions along the Mediterranean coast in early February can be unpredictable, adding another dimension to tactical decisions throughout the week.
