Race Recap

What a stunning conclusion to this year's Tour of the Alps. Stage 5 delivered everything fans of racing in the mountains could have hoped for, with a brutal final climb settling the overall classification in dramatic fashion.

The peloton set off from Riva del Garda for the final stage of this year's race, with the general classification still far from decided heading into the day's demanding parcours. Riders knew that the roads ahead would force a definitive answer to the question of who deserved to stand on the top step of the final podium.

As the stage progressed and the mountains began to take their toll, the race came alive on the final ascent to Brentonico. The leading overall contenders began to test one another with accelerations, whittling down the front group with each passing kilometer of climbing.

It was Geraint Thomas who proved the strongest on the day and across the week, the Ineos Grenadiers veteran producing a measured and authoritative performance to claim the overall victory at this year's Tour of the Alps. Thomas demonstrated exactly the kind of form that will have his rivals looking nervously toward the grand tour season ahead.

Antonio Tiberi also impressed during the final stage, showing that his early season promise is no fluke, while the overall battle behind Thomas kept things tense until the road finally flattened toward the finish.

Thomas takes the overall title in fine style, rounding into shape at exactly the right moment of the season.
