Race Recap
What a day in the mountains as Stage 3 of the Tour of the Alps delivered exactly the kind of racing fans had hoped for. The peloton tackled a demanding parcours through the Alpine terrain, and it was Geraint Thomas who came out on top, claiming a superb stage victory that also puts him in a very strong position in the overall standings.
Thomas, riding for Ineos Grenadiers, timed his effort to perfection on the final climb, dropping his rivals with a measured but decisive acceleration. The Welshman looked composed throughout the day and when it mattered most he had the legs to put clear daylight between himself and the other general classification contenders.
Felix Gall showed he is in excellent form, finishing in the mix among the top riders and demonstrating once again that he is a serious threat for the overall victory. The Austrian climber has been impressive all week and will be one to watch as the race heads into its final stages.
The day was not without its drama, as several contenders found themselves struggling to follow the pace as the road kicked up on the final ascent. The peloton had already been whittled down significantly by the repeated climbs throughout the stage before the decisive moment arrived.
Thomas now leads the general classification and will wear the race leader's jersey into Stage 4. With two stages remaining, the Ineos Grenadiers captain will be a marked man, but on today's evidence he looks more than capable of defending his lead through to Innsbruck.
