2023 Tour of the Alps Stage 2 Results & Recap
Stage 2 of the 2023 Tour of the Alps is in the books. The final results and standings are below, followed by our recap of how the race unfolded.
Race Recap
What a dramatic day in the mountains as Stage 2 of the Tour of the Alps delivered everything fans could have hoped for. The peloton tackled a demanding route through the Austrian and Italian Alps, and by the finish line, there was a new face at the top of the general classification.
Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers put in a commanding display on the final climb, distancing his rivals with a measured but powerful acceleration that none of the other overall contenders could match. The Welshman rode with the kind of authority that underlined just how serious his ambitions are heading into the Giro d'Italia, and he crossed the finish line to take both the stage victory and the leader's jersey.
The race came alive in the closing kilometres as the day's early breakaway was finally swept up by a reduced peloton. From there, the pure climbers went to work, and it was Thomas who proved strongest of all. JoĂŁo Almeida was among those who tried to follow but eventually had to concede time, while several other GC hopefuls also found themselves dropped as the gradient bit hardest near the summit finish.
Ineos Grenadiers were impressive throughout, controlling much of the race before setting the platform for Thomas to deliver. It was a well-executed team effort that bodes well for their ambitions at the upcoming Giro.
With several more stages still to come in this race, the overall battle is far from settled, but Thomas has made a very significant statement today.
