What a dramatic day in the Swiss mountains as Geraint Thomas claimed a stunning victory on Stage 6 of the Tour de Suisse, crossing the line alone atop the summit finish to take both the stage win and the overall race lead.
The stage was a demanding one through the Swiss Alps, and it was the INEOS Grenadiers who controlled much of the racing throughout the day. Thomas, the experienced Welsh rider, showed that he is in superb form heading into the summer, attacking at precisely the right moment on the final climb to distance his rivals and ride to a commanding solo victory.
The GC contenders were closely watched throughout the stage as the peloton faced a succession of challenging climbs. Several breakaway riders had gone clear earlier in the day and kept the race honest for a significant period, but as the race hit the decisive final ascent, the pure climbers and overall contenders took control and the break was swept up.
Thomas timed his move to perfection, riding away from the other favourites with the kind of authority that marks out a Grand Tour champion. His INEOS teammates had done excellent work to position him perfectly for the finale, and he did not waste the opportunity.
With the stage win secured, Thomas now sits in the leader's jersey, setting himself up as the man to beat as the race heads towards its conclusion. His rivals will need to find something extra in the coming stages if they are to unseat him from the top of the standings.
