Race Recap
Gall wins stage 4, moves into yellow
Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën Team) won stage 4 of the Tour de Suisse in Leukerbad after attacking long range on the penultimate climb, 22km from the finish. His move staved off a disorganized group of chasing GC favorites that saw Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) take second out of a reduced sprint ahead of race leader Mattias Skjelmose (Trek Segafredo) a minute and some change down from the Austrian.
“I’m a little bit overwhelmed with the situation, I still cannot really believe it,” Gall said to reporters at the finish. “I think I’m in the shape of my life. Yesterday, I felt super good. This morning, we said if I feel the same today on the last climb, I have to give it a try. I didn’t really think it would be possible because it was still a long way to the finish line … if I have the best legs in my life, I’m not going to wait in the bunch and look at the others.”
Skjelmose said he wasn't upset about losing the jersey, in fact, it takes the pressure off himself and his team.
“I hoped he would take the leader’s jersey, with me losing a minimum amount and not being in it. And that was what happened, so the day was successful,” Skjelmose said. “Albula tomorrow is much more important and can make a lot bigger difference than today. We wanted to lose the jersey to a guy I believe I can beat in the TT. Let’s see, Felix looks strong, but I still believe I have a better time trial. Remco is still up there, and even though he may be dropped sometimes, I know he’s a smart rider and also did some strong pulls today.”\n
