Race Recap
Skjelmose takes overall lead after stage 3
Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) took the overall race lead at the Tour de Suisse today after attacking on the final Cat. 1 climb to Villars-sur-Ollon and dropping Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën Team) just a few hundered metres before the finish. Juan Ayuso (UAD) finished third at 12 seconds behind the 22-year-old, who claimed his first WorldTour victory after 143.8km of a wet and mountainous day.
“I had a big question mark about my climbing abilities. OK, this maybe isn’t the hardest mountain stage, but it’s still a long climb, and I did really good,” he said. “I think we can make it a little bit of a smaller question mark, at least.”
“I wasn’t sure if Remco was playing games or if he was on the limit," he said when asked about Evenepoel's performance. "I always trusted myself, and especially when the team works like this, I just gave it everything I could.”
Remco Evenepoel (SOQ) took fourth, 21 seconds back. Overall, the Belgian champ sits second, 17 seconds behind Skjelmose.
