Girmay wins stage 2

Biniam Girmay (ICW) won stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse after a bunch gallop to the line in Notwil. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) started the wind up for the fastmen, but couldn't hold his edge and faded to Girmay's advantage. Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) finished second, and Van Aert had to be content with third after a flat and uneventful 174-kilometre stage.

"Two months after my bad crash, I haven’t had enough time to train to be back in top shape. It was surprising and amazing," Girmay said. "I knew that an Eritrean had never won a stage of the Tour de Suisse before, but to win in front of my people - that’s amazing. We’ve still got six days of racing, so I still need to focus on my race, but next time I win I’ll be celebrating with them.”

Stefan KĂĽng (Groupama FDJ) remains the race leader by five seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel (SOQ).
