Hindley takes over yellow, wins stage 5
Jai Hindley (BOH) put on a super show today on the Cat. 1 Col de Marie Blanque and moves into the yellow jersey after following an attack from Felix Gall (AG2R-Citroën) and then eventually dropping the Swiss rider to win solo into Laruns. The Australian becomes the eighth rider from his country to wear the maillot jaune in his Tour de France debut.
“This was not really the plan," Hindley said after the stage. "We kind of improvised out there, it was a way to enjoy bike racing. I found myself in that group and enjoyed it. It’s really incredible. The guys on the radio were just screaming about riding to the line… I couldn’t hear anything else. I wanted to put as much time as possible on the GC, and win the stage… and now find myself in the yellow jersey. I didn’t really know what to expect. It’s my first Tour and it’s hard to come here with such massive ambitions already. I wanted to be competitive, be on the hunt for success. And I just won a stage, which is pretty incredible. Thanks to my family, my girlfriend, my fans, everyone who supported me throughout my whole career… and I’m just so thankful to everyone.”
Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) has moved into second in the overall competition after attacking and dropping closest rival Tadej PogaÄŤar (UAE Team Emirates) on the Col de Marie Blanque. The Slovenian had no answer for the defending champion and lost 54 seconds in the first day of the Pyrenees.\n
